Taken in 2006, this is the outside of the bungalows constructed around the early 1980s to support residents in living more independently. Eight of these prefabricated units were 'hastily erected' (at the North end of the hospital site) to compensate for the immediate closure of Richard Smith Ward - shut down in 1978 by the Regional Health Authority which was appalled at its poor condition.

Please see Records 6.100 and 6.108 which contain photographs of these bungalows in their prime. The photograph in this record was taken in 2006, 10 years after hospital closure and at least that length of time since they were residential units.
