Summary:
Hearing about the Closure
Norman left the Albert around 1980, spending the remainder of his working life at Pye's Animal Feed Merchants in Lancaster. In an interview on December 8th 2005 he recounts being told about the closure of the hospital while at work. (Ref No. 7.4)
Norman: Closed it down the Royal Albert, 1996, closed it down… At the museum, went to see. ’96.
NI: So how did you feel about the hospital closing Norman?
Norman: At work at the time. Working I was at Pye’s.
NI: How did you hear about it?
Norman: (…?) told me about it?
NI: Who told you about it?
Norman: In the paper.
NI: And what did that make you feel, to think that it had closed Norman?
Norman: A bit upset about it… Didn’t like the idea of it. Cos everybody go to community work now instead of using mental hospital.
NI: But you were a bit – Why were you upset about it closing?
Norman: Used to be good, used to be good atmosphere.
NI: Say that again Norman.
Norman: Because the atmosphere, atmosphere good. Good old days. We had some good fun there…
NI: What was the good fun that you had there?
Norman: At Christmas time… Father Christmas come round.
