Photograph: In a small booklet entitled 'Royal Albert Hospital, Lancaster 1868 1968' (published by the hospital authorities) this image is described as 'Army Cadet Force - Patients Drilling.' The location is the main yard at the back of the hospital - known as The Boys' Yard. In later years, certainly by the 1980s, the line of bushes in the background had been replaced by a bicycle shed.
