This is a photograph of Florrie probably taken in the 1970s when she was a resident on Cavendish Ward, which was where this was taken. Renee Garth, a former nurse, worked on Cavendish for a number of years. Renee has very fond memories of Florrie who, as well as being extremely skilled (by any standard) at embroidery and lace work, assumed a position of great authority on the ward.

Summary:

In this extract, from an interview recorded on September 27th 2006, a former nurse Renee Garth recalls 2 female residents doing house work: Florrie (pictured) for a member of the hospital staff; the other for a senior member of the housing department at what was then the equivalent of Lancaster City Council. Renee started in the late 1950s /early 1960s.

'When I first went there there was a Doctor Graham, a lovely old man. He, he lived in what they called Graham House, that was one behind Barlow now… the whole family lived there. And Florrie, the one that did this* she used to go across everyday and help in the house, with the house work… And one or two actually went out to work…  Margaret Chapman, she was from Barrow. But she used to go out to what they called – there was lady called Miss Baines, she lived at Scotforth and she was in charge of the housing, Miss Baines. And Margaret used to go and, she used to clean her fireplace out for her and all sorts of household duties.’
*Exceptionally intricate lace work.
