Caption:

This is a photograph of nurses at the Royal Albert who had fire fighting duties at the hospital. It was probably taken just before the Second World War in either 1938 or 1939. Coming from the collection of Mr S.R. Gardner. who was the Chief Fireguard Officer for Lancaster, it was discovered by his son-in-law, Mr David Hudson. The latter's father, Mr. Tom Hudson, appears on the extreme right of the photograph; he became Chief Male Nurse in around 1950, retiring in 1966. From left to right the other personnel in the image are: Mr Anderson (who lived at 2 Royal Albert Cottages); Mr Corless (the hospital cobbler, living at 26 De Vitre Cottages); David wasn't sure who this man was; Mr Allison (residing at 16 De Vitre Cottages); Mr Walmsley (28 De Vitre Cottages); and lastly Mr Tom Hudson who lived with his family at 12 Royal Albert Cottages.
Incidentally, Royal Albert and De Vitre Cottages were the names of two terraces of houses belonging to the hospital and situated across the road from the main building.
